Saskatoon Track & Field Club History
The establishment of the Saskatoon Track & Field Club dates back to 1948. Local track enthusiasts such as Jack Lydiard, Clarence Garvie, Drayton Walker, Percy Macguire and Mike Hall took steps to form the club.
In 1949, a partnership was established with the Saskatoon Hilltop Football Club. While football players could participate in the off-season for conditioning, the Hilltops provided financial assistance to the new club and uniforms for the athletes. After a couple years, this partnership dissolved, but today our colours are still Royal Blue and Yellow Gold.
In 1954 Bob Adams, who was a member of the club since its inception as both an athlete and a coach, took over much of the leadership of the club. Bob Adams for whom the Saskatoon High School Championships are named, was an Olympic athlete coach and official at various stages of his career in Athletics. He remained with the club for many years, and from time to time still pops in to see how we are doing.
In 1993, at the urging of Club President Tom Flood, a new group of parents led by Ken McKechney and new Head Coach Darcy Cumming, took over the operations of the club and brought about the resurgence of STFC. Today the club can boast a membership of over 150 athletes ranging in ability from beginner to National Team members from ages 8 to masters of all ages.
For 60 years, STFC has hosted a number of National and International meets including two hugely successful National Junior Championships in 2003 and 2004 under the guidance of president Bob Fawcett and Head Coach Todd Johnston. Numerous club athletes have represented the Club nationally at various national championships, and many have been fortunate enough, through hard work and dedication, to represent Canada at all levels of International competition including the Olympic Games.
Saskatoon Track & Field Club Affiliations
In order to provide the best possible athletic experience for the athletes in the club, STFC is affiliated with a number of partner organizations.
Hub City Track Council is the organization of all the track clubs in Saskatoon. Through this partnership, STFC shares major equipment costs, facility rental expenses, and training time at both the Saskatoon Fieldhouse and Griffith Stadium.
Saskatchewan Athletics is the Sport Governing body for Athletics in Saskatchewan. Like each athlete, every club is required to have a membership with Saskatchewan Athletics. Included in each athletes membership is membership with Athletics Canada, the National Sport Governing body for Athletics.
University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Each year STFC has a number of athletes who, during the indoor season, compete for the Huskie track team, and during the fall for the Huskie cross country team. This partnership allows athletes to compete at both the College level and the Club Level.
NCCP All of the clubs coaches are certified through the NCCP. (National Coaching Certification Program)

Communication
There is much information to be distributed throughout the year. In an effort to ensure timely distribution of club happenings to athletes and parents, we have established a number of communication paths to get the word out:
- hand out sheets at the track
- emails from coaches and club administrators
- Web Page saskatoontrack.com
Track Meet Registration & Fees
Registration for track meets takes place two weeks prior to a meet from 4:30 to 5:30pm at the track. A table is set up near the warm up area, and receipts will be issued. Athletes will be notified by the above mentioned methods of communication. Once the registration fees have been paid to the meet organizers, refunds will not be given. Athletes will not be registered until fees are paid. If you register late, all appropriate late fees will be applied depending on the meet. Typically event fees in Saskatchewan are $10.00 per event. Fees may vary up and down for meets in other provinces.
Club Work Requirement
STFC relies solely on volunteers for its operations success. Many of our members perform hundreds of hours of volunteer labor for the club – all of which is greatly appreciated by athletes and parents and by our community. This year we are implementing a policy, which requires a $100 volunteer commitment from each athlete. A minimum of 10 volunteer hours is required for each athlete registered with the club, in order to recoup your $100. Volunteer hours include volunteering at track meets (track or field events), road race, auction or working in the lunch room as well as bringing food items for the lunch room. Once all 10 hours are completed a refund will be issued.
Fundraising Requirement
STFC engages in fund-raising to help defray the costs of operating the club. Each member of STFC is required to sell two books of raffle tickets. In addition all senior level athletes are required to help with our major fundraising effort, the STFC Auction.
Other Ways you can Help
The Administration of the club requires dedicated parents to:
- serve on the board of directors
- help with registration for track meets
- Chaperone Club competition trips
- Solicit donations, sell tickets for Auction
Volunteering in this capacity can be rewarding, and informative. Your time and talents are greatly appreciated.
Payment and Refund Policy/Termination of Membership
1. For voluntary withdrawal, a full refund of unused membership fees will apply only when 30 days written notice is provided to the club. Otherwise, an additional amount equivalent to one month’s membership fees will be assessed to the athlete.
2. If an injury or illness extends past one month, upon producing a medical certificate, fees will be refunded on a pro-rated basis from the time the injury or illness occurred. Athletes who have suspended their membership for injury or illness are not allowed to participate in or attend training sessions. A $30 reactivation fee will be assessed if/ when the athlete resumes his/her membership.
3. Saskatchewan Athletics fees and Hub City Track Council fees and raffle tickets are non-refundable.
Registration Policy
1. Registration fees set by the club are payable in one lump sum or with three cheques. One at time of registration, November 15 and February 1.
2. Full payment includes club fees, Saskatchewan Athletics fee, Hub City Council Fee and raffle tickets.
3. If registration takes place after November 30th, club registration fees will be pro-rated. Saskatchewan Athletics fee, Hub City Council fee and raffle tickets must be paid with the first payment and are not prorated.
4. If registration takes place after January 1st the raffle tickets do not have to be paid for, but a late registration fee of $50.00 will be charged. If training commences before January 15th but no official registration has taken placed, raffle tickets, Saskatchewan Athletics fee, and the Hub City Council fee will still have to paid for.
5. Any fees in arrears will constitute suspension from track privileges until the account is up-to-date. After 14 days a letter will be sent home with the athlete. Any fees still in arrears 7 days after the letter is sent will result in athlete suspension.
